A Lateral Thinking Puzzle for You

A lateral thinking puzzle to start off the week for you:

Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don’t know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police bust in on a carpenter, a lorry driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman.

How do they know they’ve got their man?

  1. Well done gentlemen, it’s a similar test to the one given to young people during their Young Enterprise ‘Learn to Earn’ projects to help them overcome stereotyping jobs.

It’s been interesting today from the calls, texts, Tweets, and the comments above to see that this little puzzle baffled a fair few in our industry! However, eventually everyone so far has got it but it’s hopefully effective at making an important point.

Your turn!
